"Then little children were brought to Him that he might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.'" (Matthew 19:13-14)

A Prayer of Parents for Children

O God our heavenly Father, who lovest mankind, and art most merciful and compassionate, have mercy upon thy servants for whom I humbly pray thee, and commend to thy gracious care and protection. Be thou, O God, their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of thy truth, and draw them nearer to thee, that they may lead a godly and righteous life in thy love and fear; doing thy will in all things. Give them grace that they may be temperate, industrious, diligent, devout and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption of this life; and direct them in the way of salvation, through the merits of thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, and the intercessions of his Holy Mother and thy blessed saints. Amen

Mission Statement The mission of our Sunday School program is to partner with the parents in the spiritual development of our youth so that together we can instill the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in our students’ hearts, minds, and souls.

Program Description

Our Sunday School staff is blessed with the wonderful opportunity to nurture the spiritual development of our youth from preschool through twelfth grade. We focus on developing the religious, moral, and liturgical awareness of our youth through a comprehensive and multifaceted curriculum that incorporates worship, holy tradition, scripture, iconography, hymnology and discipleship. Our ultimate goal is provide our youth with a solid foundation in the Orthodox faith. Sunday School is in session from September through June. Our program for 2012-2013 consists of seven classes with approximately 90 students.

Every Sunday, children assemble in church at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy for family worship. After the Lord’s Prayer, Father George calls the children forward for the Youth Sermon. The children sit in pews designated for the Sunday School classes. After the hymn following Holy Communion, the students and teachers proceed to their classrooms. Dismissal for preschool through 6th grade is 11:45; dismissal for 7th through 12th grade is 12:00. On those days when we stay in church for a procession or program, dismissal is fifteen minutes later.

Curriculum

The curriculum consists primarily of material developed by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. We provide developmentally appropriate lessons to make the learning process enjoyable and fun for the younger children. The curriculum becomes increasingly specific for the older children and teenagers, concentrating on the sacraments, scriptures, and traditions of our church, while also applying the fundamentals of our Orthodox faith to real-world situations and everyday interactions. The majority our classrooms have combined grade levels in an effort to maintain a reasonable teacher to student ratio.

Sunday School Library Please visit our library for a wide selection of books for all ages, preschool through adult. We also have children’s DVD’s and CD’s that you can borrow. The library is located in the corridor outside the Sunday School Office.

Prayer Corners

Each classroom has a prayer corner where the students gather for opening and closing prayers. We encourage parents to provide a space at home for prayer. We will help you obtain any of the following items for your child: Bibles, crosses, icons, and prayer books.

Sunday School Registration It is never too late to register for our Sunday School program! Please complete a registration form and return it to one of our directors or teachers. A donation of $25 per child is suggested.

Parents As parents, we strive to nurture our children in all facets of their development. We want them to grow intellectually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. As Christians, the most sacred task set before us, however, is to help our children grow spiritually. We are here to help parents teach our children how to live their Orthodox faith. Together, we can give them the foundation to live Christian lives and to go out into the world and share their faith.

As part of the registration process, we ask that parents agree to assist the Sunday School program by committing to
1) regular attendance at the Divine Liturgy beginning at 9:30 AM, and
2) volunteering at two key annual events.
